Dionysiou Areopagitou, Athens

Acropolis of Athens is the symbol of the city and standing proof of ancient Greek civilization. It is an ancient citadel standing on the edge of a rocky mountain overlooking the city of Athens. The name "acropolis" in Greek means a complex built on a high hill, "akro" for edge and "polis" for city.

The first stone of Acropolis was laid on 28 July 447 BC, during the Panathenaic festival. It contains remains of ancient buildings of huge historic significance. The highlight of the complex is Parthenon, a 4th century temple.

Athenians wanted to create a lasting monument that would proclaim the fame of Athens in the world. It honors Greek goddess Athena. Acropolis features typical classical Greek 5th century architecture.

All the valuable ancient artifacts found in Acropolis are kept and exhibited in the Acropolis Museum.

Plan your visit to Acropolis daily from 8am to 6:30 pm. The entrance fee is about 20 euros and provides access to the other sites in the area including the Ancient Agora, Theater of Dionysos, Kerameikos, Roman Agora, Tower of the Winds and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.

You need to climb up the steps of the hill to reach Acropolis. For people with disabilities there is a special elevator that can lift up to the monument. Note that this elevator is only for disabled visitors and people assisting them.

It is a must-visit place if you are coming to Greece for any reason. You would need at least one full day if you want to tour the area. For those who do not know, acropolis is the name of the area (means rock top), Parthenon is the famous temple on top. The view from the top is simply amazing. You can take 10s of pictures. Great view of Athens city, the sea, and surrounding mountains. Entry fee is 20 euros. There are bathrooms at the top. I have not seen any water or refreshments kiosks up there at long the way, so bring your water with you just on case. You can easily spend 2 hours there if you just want to walk without stopping to enjoy and learn. At the end of the day at closure time there will be some army soldiers or national guards to ensure closure of the area. It was nice seeing them. It can pass as a finale show. (I would make it a show to entertain tired tourists after a long day at the acropolis).

Ready for a spectacular visit? If you want to make the most of it: 1- arrive EARLY! We were there when the gates opened at 8am, very nice visit for two hours. By the time we were leaving, the tour groups made the hill feel like a circle of hell. 2- bring WATER and sun protection, as there is essentially no shade and the water fountain on site isn’t great. Other than that have a great time is this unique place!

What can you say about this place? It is an absolute place of wonder which I feel privileged to have enjoyed on several occasions. If you're in Athens this is a must. The history, the views of the city, and the impressive size and atmosphere make it a pure pleasure to visit and you leave feeling like you've experienced something special. If there's a negative, it's that it can be very busy, but given that it's one of the most famous structures on earth that's to be expected.

Absolutely wonderful experience. Prepare to walk a lot though! I never realized how many important historical ruins were at the foot of the Acropolis as well, you can even sit in one of the main amphitheaters! Once at the top, everything is just amazing. They’ve done a wonderful job restoring the site and the view is amazing.

A must visit site in Greece - or the whole world for that matter. The history of the Western world began here and the iconic Parthenon does not disappoint. There is always a crowd of tourists but if you visit in autumn or winter, it’s much less. Breathe in the beauty and soak up the history. The rock of the Acropolis is light at night which makes the city’s iconic image ever present.

Amazing place to visit, specially if your fan of history. If possible, try to get ticket early. There was big queue on ticket counter and took almost an hour. There are guided tours available and they will try to contact you while standing in the ticket counter queue. It is the main historic spot in Athens. It is ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens. In this most famous is Parthenon temple.

Absolutely amazing if your a fan of history. Probably a bit like visiting a building site if your not! Ignore the crane and the forklift moving stones around, once the renovation is finished it will be unbelievable. The whole climb up to it and the peace and quiet and the view from the top is impressive now but you get a real sense of awe about the place that must have been overwhelming in its heyday. Thoroughly recommended, loved it so much doing it again with the kids.

Amazing view over the beautiful city of Athens. Definitely must visit place in Athens. The architecture and buildings are spectacular. I would recommend to visit this place in early hrs or late evening. During the day the place gets really busy and you might need to experience waiting time to buy a tickets and also big crowd will spoil the experience and some great shots which you might be hunting for!

Loved it here. But it's hot and no shade. There is water but it doesn't taste good. I'd advise to buy some. The toilets are not the best but at least there are some. The walking up is hard work mainly because the floor in parts is incredibly slippy being marble. So wear a hat & sensible foot wear and take water. It's amazing worth every penny and step.
