Basilica Catedrale Sant'Agata V.M. Catania

Via Etnea, Catania

Catania Cathedral is the main dome and the religious center of Catania. It was constructed and built in 11th century, but was destroyed several times because of the earthquakes and the eruptions of the nearby Mount Etna. Today the original construction, which survived includes the two towers and the three semicircular apses, composed of large lava stones, most of them recovered from imperial Roman buildings.
The Cathedral’s Baroque façade leaves its visitors speechless. It has three levels with Corinthian columns in granite. The Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Agatha. All the orders are decorated with marble statues of Saint Agatha over the gate, Saint Euplius on the right and Saint Birillus on the left.
The bell tower was originally erected in 1387, with a height of some 70 meters.
The cathedral has a Latin cross ground plan, with a nave and two aisles.

Main saint cathedral is a must see while visiting Sicily. A marvellous silver altar is something you simply must see! Some Arabic elements can be spotted in this Christian masterpiece of sacral art. The cathedral itself is something so magnificent that would take days to admire. Remember-Y as a tourist you are still visiting a temple, so be respectful!

This is the main church in Catania. Made with lava stone, this cathedral represents the heart and souls of the city.

It was too late in the evening for visiting the cathedral, strolling in the square in front of it was nice.

Seems to be the main cathedral on city and it is free to visit. Very impressive interiors and unique colour outside. Some tombs of bishops and cardinals but little information about their role in the city history.

Nice cathedral with some interesting sculptures and paintings but not very impressive. For sure it is the place you should visit in Catania. I recommend to check opening hours as it is not open all the time.
