Piazzale Michelangelo

Viale Michelangelo, Florence

4.5

Piazzale Michelangelo is the best place to get an outlook at the city of Florence. It is available day and night, most importantly for free! You just need to climb up and enjoy the views!

There are several ways for you to reach the piazza. Firstly, if you're in downtown Florence, you can take a walk along the river towards the Torre San Niccolo. As long as you reach it, climb up the hill through the looping ramps until you get to the piazza.

Another shorter walk route is from the Porta San Miniato gateway up to the hill through a steep street.

However, if you are lazy enough to climb the hill up, you can use public transportation. Take the local bus number 12 or 13 from the train station. You can even take a taxi all the way up to Piazza Michelangelo for just €1.20.

We kept finding ourselves wanting to return to Piazzale Michelangelo and for good reason. The views are outstanding! It’s a very easy journey on a scooter or car or by public transportation. There’s a few places to grab a bite or a drink and plenty or merchants for souvenirs. FYI, the merchants have the best prices in Florence. You can buy a sweatshirt for 10 euros and the same goes for 28 euros by the duomo! Make sure you visit VIPs bar and go a pet the bathroom attendants dog 🐶 very well behaved!

Beautiful! If you're interested in the culture, I highly suggest that you make this a stop on your list along with many others that I plan on adding. Be sure to pay close attention to the brass doors as they tell a story. Also pay close attention to the pink and green marble that was used to construct the building. Absolutely gorgeous! It amazes me to think that people during those times had the ability to create some of the art that was created.

Said to be the place to get the best view in Florence, I can easily say, that perception is correct. Visiting the Piazzale Michelangelo confirmed for me that Florence is the most beautiful city in Italy I have visited (and I adore Rome). On a clear day, you can see the whole city, up to the hills and across to the distant mountains. The city is so vibrant and colourful and has a uniqueness to it that means it is no surprise that it is the perfect location for couples, families and solo travellers. The Piazzale itself is a reasonable stair climb (it really isn't that bad if you are used to walking) and there are spaces to sit, drink, eat and buy your tourist wares. You can also drive or take a tour bus up if you like! There are so many angles at which to take photos from and there is more than enough space for hundreds of visitors. I would recommend visiting the Piazzale, especially if you have limited time in Florence. If there is only one place you can see from south of the river (the river itself also is at a good angle from the piazzale), this is the place to go.

The best look out point in Florence. Maybe Italy, and possibly the world! A great view of the entire old town Florence where you can see easily the several Cathedrals within the city, which include the magnificent Duomo. Breathtaking view and walk to the view point. It is a steep walk if doing so from old town Florence, but a real reward awaits the top when you get there. A must go to location in Florence! P.S. A lovely place to see the city at night as well, plus there is usually someone playing music to make the experience even more memorable.

Beautiful place for those who like to take a walk uphill. The view above the city is great. Walking up those stairs definitely worth it. You can see the dome, the old bridge. Basically the entire city. There are also some stone benches on which you can rest and feel the wind blowing. There is also a bar or two and a public toilet. It is not very crowded so I was glad to take a break from the city crowds.

We visited in October 2017. Incredible view across town, especially during the lightning storm we observed. This is a very romantic spot with only a few trinket places so not spoiling the atmosphere. Quite a walk to get up there but worth it. A must see in Florence. Great for taking picturesque photos.

Obviously this is a must visit place in Florence. The best views of the city can be found here, and best of all at sunset. I went here for sunset one day and there are a few things to note: 1) If you are driving here, parking is absolutely crazy. I got pretty lucky and good a good spot relatively quickly, but there are cars parked all over the place and cars circling looking for spots. 2) The piazza also gets very crowded at sunset with people lined all the way around the edge and people sitting at all of stairways to the point of nearly blocking passage. Overall still definitely worth it (check out the pictures I got!), just be ready for crowds.

One of if not the most highly recommended places to visit in Florence. The view here at sunset is just amazing and should be a bucket list item. The climb up can be a little steep however just take your time and it will be worth it. There is usually live music and drinks stalls around, grab a drink and enjoy the sunset.

Beautiful view over Florence, it is a must go place. Going on foot up the hill may be a challenge for some, but it is worth it to see. We went here at night to admire the night lights of the city which were breathtaking. There are bars and music for those who want to enjoy a few drinks. Only issue were drunk and stoned patrons that left a lot of trash and glass bottles roll over down the stairs that shattered. One person even cut her hand and there didn't seem to be any first aid nearby.

For me, this is a must in this city. While is true that most of the people that arrive to the piazza are in couples or little groups, I would recommend it to anyone, even if you just go by yourself. The sunset slowly landing on the city of Firenze creates a very serene and romantic atmosphere. Just make sure to arrive on time if you want a place to sit on the stairs to calmly watch the sunset with a snack. In my opinion though, this is not the best place to bring kids as they might get easily desperate. Otherwise, the landscape and the ambience in this place is almost magical.

Worth the walk! Also make sure you take a short trip up to San Miniato al Monte, just up the hill, to see the church and cemetery.
