Piazza della Signoria is a historically important square in Florence. The square dates back to 1330 and has been the center of city's political life since then. Burning of heretics of inquisition have taken place here.
The square lies in front of the Palazzo della Signoria, also famous as Palazzo Vecchio.
The landmarks of the square are , David by Michelangelo, the Neptune Fountain and Loggia dei Lanzi.
Michelangelo's famous David (the original is in Accademia Gallery) stands in the square as a symbol of independence and freedom of Florence.
Bandinelli's Hercules and Cacus is a white sculpture to the right of the entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio that dates back to 1525-1534.
The Fountain of Neptune, also famous as Biancone, was constructed to celebrate the wedding of Francesco Medici in 1565. The figure of Neptune stands in the middle of fountain. It symbolized then the dominance of Florence in the sea.
Loggia dei Lanzi is an open-air sculpture gallery designed back in 1376. It features famous curved arches of Renaissance classicism. Its landmark is Giambologna's Rape of the Sabines.
Behind the Loggia dei Lanzi you can find Florence's top art gallery, Uffizi Gallery.
