Puerta de Alcala

Plaza de la Independencia, 1, Madrid

The Puerta de Alcala is a neo-classical marvelous structure that stands in the Independence Square of Madrid. It serves as a symbol of Madrid city.

It is a triumphal arch and the first one build in Europe. Madrid's Arch is even older than Paris’s Arc de Triumph and Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate. It dates back to 1778.

Puerta de Alcala means “Alcala Gate.” It served as a gate for the Walls of Philip Fourth. It is located at heart of Madrid in the city center, on a walking distance from Retiro Park’s main entrance.

The arch is 22 meters tall. Six statues decorate the top of the gate. They were designed by Francisco Gutierrez and Roberto Michel. The façade of the gate has a placard that says: "REGE CARLO III ANNO MDCCLXXVIII." This is the date when the arch was inaugurated.

Not much to see here. Nice gate and directly next to Retiro park but that’s about it.

Just like many monuments i Madrid, this one is located on a roundabout. This may make it hard to see all the details on the gate but nevertheless there is a bus stop where you can see pretty much alot from. Photos look best when it is sunny. It is exactly outside El retiro park which is gorgeous. I definitely recommend this place. It is one of the first monuments you will see in Madrid because it is located on the way to and from the airport.

Beautiful archways. If you are nearby its worth it. I wouldn't go out of my way to see it though

Nice landmark. The light at the middle of the day makes it hard to get a decent picture so you'll have to cross the street and get on the actual roundabout.

It's the first post Roman triumphal arch built in Europe. You can see it but you can't access the actual arch. It has coffee terraces all around.

Legendary monument next to the Retiro park. The most interesting of it is the history behind

another landmark of madrid. an archway. actually a gate with three adjacent arches and another two punches on the two sides of the arches. it has huge historic value. the road from this gate leads to another nearby small city called alcala del honares. that is why this gateway has its name. it was built when alcala del honares was conquered by the royals based in madrid. the wall still bears some bullet marks from the spanish civil war.

A large gate celebrating the defeat of the French in 1808. It sits in the middle of a roundabout where you can get a good view of it from either a car or as a pedestrian from the curb.

Apparently there's a song about this place. I don't know it but I get why someone would sing about it. Nice place.
